ATLANTA: A social study in the United States has shown that if only one dollar was added to the salaries of workers, it could reduce suicide rates by 6 percent. It should be noted that this study has been done on Americans and is based only on American society, but in a broader context, with the necessary amendments, it can be tested for the economic and social situation of any other country in the world.

In this research conducted at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, from 1990 to 2015, unemployment in the 50 states of the United States, minimum wages, and changes in government policy decisions about low incomes. Suicide rates were evaluated in the upper class.

The low-income people were between the ages of 18 and 64, while the least educated. The study found that if the US government increased the minimum wage / compensation by just $ 1 in the economic crisis of 2009 to 2015, it would have prevented 13,800 people from committing suicide; and if that increase would have been only $ 2. So 25,900 people would prefer to survive rather than commit suicide.

The requirement is that the study not only be rejected on a geographical or political basis, but also to take serious advantage of it in the local context.

According to official statistics, 2.9 out of every 100,000 (100,000) Pakistanis commit suicide annually. Depending on the population, the estimated annual number of suicides in Pakistan is 6380. The World Health Organization, on the other hand, said that the rate in Pakistan is 7.5 per one lakh annually, meaning that 16,500 people commit suicide every year in Pakistan.

Review of any society in the world, economic misery is the biggest cause of suicide there. Simply put, this research means that if you want people in your society to stop suicidal and make a living, then you need to not only reduce unemployment but also the minimum wage of a worker. All they have to do is cover the basic expenses of their home.

Details of the findings of this study and the findings from it have been published in the latest issue of the "BMJ Journal of Epi Demology and Community Health" and are also available for free to the public to use.
